writer-in-residence program
An afternoon Open House in August encourages the general public to visit James Merrill’s apartment. The James Merrill House Creative Writing Award is presented annually to a high school student at the local high school’s Academic Awards Ceremony. In May, the committee invites a distinguished speaker to deliver a special lecture in the literary field.
The Merrill House committee believes the presence of talented writers enriches the life of the community. Its policy is therefore to enable the writer-in-residence to become a part of the community as much as possible during his or her time in Stonington. Writers are expected to give a reading once during their residency. Other projects are encouraged, including classes, workshops and other informal gatherings.
