The Merrill House committee believes the presence of talented writers enriches the life of the community. Its policy is therefore to enable the writer-in-residence to become a part of the community and to share their work, their ideas, and their experiences though readings, workshops, and informal gatherings.

Each May, the Committee invites a distinguished speaker to deliver The Annual James Merrill Lecture. We are in our fifth year of the series and have been proud to bring well known writers to speak or to read from their own work. This year's guest, the novelist Rick Moody, is the first James Merrill Lecturer to appear at the newly renovated LaGrua Center off Water Street in Stonington Boro.

Four afternoons a year James Merrill's apartment is open to the general public. Special visits may be arranged occasionally by appointment.

We encourage young writers in the community through a program of workshops in the high school and by offering annually the James Merrill House Creative Writing Award to a high school student for excellence in creative writing.

To learn more about our activities, see our
Spring 2010 newsletter.

The lecture, as all Merrill House Committee events, is free and open to the public. Please contact us via our website for more information and directions.
