Spaide is a critic, poet, and teacher. He is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi. He also serves as Secretary for The Wallace Stevens Society and is the literary executor for Helen Vendler.

Spaide is a critic, poet, and teacher. He is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi. He also serves as Secretary for The Wallace Stevens Society and is the literary executor for Helen Vendler.
His essays, reviews, and poems have appeared in The Boston Globe, Boston Review, Lana Turner, The Nation, The New Yorker, Ploughshares, Poetry, Slate, and The Yale Review. Additionally, he has been a poetry columnist for the Poetry Foundation and Literary Hub. His academic writing has appeared in American Literary History, The Cambridge Quarterly, College Literature, Contemporary Literature, ELH, The Wallace Stevens Journal, and more.
He has received fellowships from the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University, Harvard University’s Houghton Library, the Harvard Society of Fellows, the James Merrill House, and the Keasbey Foundation, among other honors.
His online lecture series, “Look Closely at the Letters”: A Six-Part Introduction to Reading James Merrill’s Poetry, James Merrill House, Spring 2023, is still available for those looking to dive deeper into Merrill’s poetry.
