About the event

Join us for an inspiring workshop with renowned poet and writer, Paul Maddern. In this engaging event, Paul will delve into the fascinating topic of landscape as a totemic marker of aesthetic change. Discover how landscapes shape our artistic expressions and explore the transformative power of nature.

Donegal, on Ireland’s west coast and its most northerly county, is an oft-Romanticised landscape, but how poets respond to and employ that landscape is indicative of changes within Irish poetic practice. Looking at poems by Eithne Carberry, Derek Mahon, Conor O’Callaghan, Leontia Flynn, and Mícheál McCann, we can map these changes and ask how carefully considered shifts in aesthetic practice are expressed through the writer’s relationship with culturally loaded landscapes.

Date: Wednesday, November 8th

Time: 5:30-6:30pm, with optional drink after the class to socialize with classmates

Location: James Merrill House Visitors Center
